YOU MUST BECOME THE MARDUK OF YOUR STORY
The story is almost 4,000 years old, from the Enuma Elish of Mesopotamia. While history doesn't repeat, it rhymes in fractals — and this one applies just as much now as it did then.
Chaos and Order
In the beginning there are two figures, Chaos and Order — partners, and in balance. Their children begin causing problems and accidentally kill their father, Order. The world without Order becomes terrible. Gods appear one by one, each attempting to defeat Chaos and bring Order back — and one by one they fail. Then a new god arrives: Marduk. The others plead with him to confront Chaos. He agrees, on one condition: if he wins, he becomes the one god to rule above all the others.
Two Special Powers
Marduk is unique among the gods for two powers: he can speak magic words, and he has eyes all around his head. He goes to battle against Chaos and, using his powers, ensnares her in a giant net. He takes no pity — he slices her into millions of pieces, and then weaves those pieces into a tremendous tapestry: the world humans live in.
The Eyes: Awareness
The eyes around his head symbolize always looking around, never being afraid to see what is happening. Many people have businesses with one or two problems they are too happy to ignore. Not Marduk — his eyes make it impossible to miss something. In the Method, this is awareness: track what actually happens, watch the indicators that matter, and manage by exception.
The Words: Precise Language
We too have words — but are they magic? Everything great humans have done was done by stringing together the right words. In today's world, much the same as 4,000 years ago, it is with our words that we make real and meaningful change. In business, the magic words are written SOPs, completion criteria, and agreements your whole team has opted into. Use your words: they are magic.
The Net and the Tapestry
To win, you need the right tools — a better net. The net collects all of the chaos in your life and lets you cut it into pieces. We call those pieces tasks, and we divide them into three categories: Projects, Chores and Responsibilities. Then the Method weaves those tasks together into your business system — restoring Order and making things good in the world again.
Why It's a Myth
What makes it a myth is that it's transcendent: it applies just as much now as it did then. You have many 'gods' in your life that are supposed to be helping you — the apps you use, the tasks you complete over and over again, the commitments you have made — and if they are not coordinated, you get chaos. To establish order in your life, you need a Marduk. You must become the Marduk of your story. Isn't it remarkable that our ancestors figured this out 4,000 years ago?
